US Sanctions Indian and Turkish Firms Over Iran Ties
Measures target a network accused of facilitating Iranian oil exports and servicing restricted airlines.
The United States Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on individuals and companies based in India and Turkey. The American government accuses these targets of helping Iran bypass restrictions placed on its oil exports and aviation operations.
The investigation reveals that an Indian couple, Suniel Kumar Sharma and Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, operated a criminal network from Chandigarh. They allegedly created fraudulent maritime registrations in the names of countries such as Guyana, Laos, and Eswatini to conceal the origin of Iranian oil tankers.
The scheme, active since 2014, used websites that mimicked official port authorities to issue flag certificates. These actions allowed ships linked to Iranian military forces to continue operating without being detected by international authorities.
In Turkey, the company Fugo Ground Services was also sanctioned by the US Treasury. The firm is accused of providing ground services to Iranian airlines that are already under US restrictions, such as Iran Air Tour and Saha Airlines.
The sanctions freeze assets held by the targets on American soil and prohibit transactions with United States citizens. The initiative is part of an operation called Economic Outcast, which seeks to reduce the oil revenue used by the Iranian government.
