US Sanctions Canadian Firms Over Financial Ties to Iran
Eight currency exchange companies are accused of facilitating digital transactions for restricted Iranian entities.
The United States Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on eight Canadian financial services companies. The American government claims these firms conducted business with Iranian entities already under international restrictions.
The companies allegedly facilitated the exchange of Iranian rials and other currencies for digital assets. The goal was to enable international transactions while bypassing existing regulations. These operations involved digital asset addresses linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The measures aim to isolate these companies from the dollar-based financial system. The US Treasury stated that Canada should not be a haven for financial facilitators who assist the Iranian regime. The action was coordinated with the Canadian financial intelligence unit.
In addition to the sanctions, the United States rewards program has offered up to 20 million dollars for information regarding Iran's nuclear program. The American government is seeking details on facilities and uranium enrichment equipment. Iran faces criticism for a lack of transparency with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The US Treasury reinforced that it will continue to pursue financial channels used by the Iranian regime anywhere in the world. The campaign focuses on preventing the use of digital assets to fund activities considered illicit. Some sanctioned companies reportedly changed names and addresses to avoid detection.
