United States special envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in Saint Petersburg to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The agenda aims to find paths to end the conflict that has lasted nearly five years. The meeting follows productive discussions Witkoff held with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Oslo.
Zelenskyy reinforced his stance that any agreement regarding Ukraine's future requires direct participation from Kyiv. The Ukrainian leader declared that nothing concerning his country should be decided without Ukrainian representatives at the negotiating table. He discussed security guarantees and a potential trilateral meeting format between the United States, China, and Russia with American officials.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the envoy brought ideas gathered in Norway to present to the Russian side. Jared Kushner participated in the talks with Zelenskyy remotely and is expected to join the meeting with Putin through the same channel. The US government is working to assess whether there is room for immediate diplomatic progress.
Relations between Washington and Kyiv are currently experiencing public tension. President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with the conduct of the conflict, while Zelenskyy has criticized the easing of American sanctions against Russia. Recent attacks on civilian and energy targets in Ukraine keep the landscape of instability high.
Zelenskyy confirmed that the sharing of American intelligence regarding Russian attacks has resumed. Both sides continue to debate the maintenance of air defense systems and satellite connectivity. Feedback on the proposals presented by Witkoff should be known soon.
