A major train accident in central Spain has resulted in the deaths of 69 people. The disaster occurred on a high-speed line south of Madrid and scattered debris across a hillside.

The incident shakes public confidence in the rail network and the administration of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The government faces a delicate moment as the country prepares for snap general elections in just a few weeks.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente attributed the tragedy to human error during manual operation of the line. He stated that the LZB safety system was operating within European standards despite recording frequent glitches this year.

Investigations show that a controller authorized a train to travel at 160 km/h even with another vehicle stopped ahead. Screens and audio communications at the control center in Madrid displayed the dangerous situation before the collision occurred.

The opposition, led by the People's Party, is demanding the minister's resignation on ethical and moral grounds. The government is trying to contain the criticism while dealing with previous corruption allegations and rising housing costs.

This climate of political instability in Spain raises concerns regarding the country's governance during a sensitive period for the current administration.
