Russia Bans Petrochemical Exports for Three Months
The measure aims to secure domestic supply of raw materials for the Russian industrial sector.
The Russian government has ordered a temporary ban on the export of specific categories of petrochemical products. The restriction covers shipments to destinations outside the Eurasian Economic Union and will remain in effect for three months.
Items affected by the measure include petroleum benzene, coal tar benzene, toluene, phenol, orthoxylene, and paraxylene. The official goal is to ensure a stable supply of these inputs for industrial companies within Russian territory.
These chemical products are essential for manufacturing paints and varnishes used in sectors such as automotive and aerospace. They are also used in shipbuilding, railway engineering, food packaging, and electrical cable insulation.
There are exceptions provided in the official government statement. The ban does not apply to goods in international transit, humanitarian aid shipments, or materials intended for Russian organizations in the Spitsbergen Archipelago.
The disruption in the flow of energy and chemical inputs may increase volatility in global commodity prices and put pressure on the dollar as a safe-haven asset.
