Serbia is facing a parliamentary election with unprecedented levels of participation. By early afternoon, about 46% of voters had already cast their ballots, significantly surpassing the figures recorded in the December 2023 election.
The student movement, organized under the Student List, is attempting to remove the Serbian Progressive Party from power. Aleksandar Vučić's political group has governed the country since 2012. Popular mobilization gained momentum after a railway station canopy collapse caused 16 deaths in 2024.
Analysts note that a final turnout above 65% could favor the opposition. The students' proposals include fighting corruption, removing political allies from state-owned companies, and ensuring the independence of the public radio and television broadcaster.
Vučić, who seeks to return to the position of prime minister, denies accusations of corruption and media control. The leader still maintains a solid base of supporters who consider him a central figure for the country's stability.
The tense atmosphere is visible on the streets, with police cordons around the Republic Electoral Commission in Belgrade. Long lines were reported in several Serbian cities and at consulates abroad, such as in Munich, Chicago, and Paris.
