The White House announced that Melania Trump mediated a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky. The location has been under Russian occupation since the conflict began in February 2022. The measure aims to facilitate the evacuation of residents and the delivery of essential supplies.
The agreement dictates that military forces will cease fire starting at 02:00 GMT on October 27. The official truce begins on October 29. Civilian leaders from both countries will work together to assess the needs of the local population.
Oleshky is facing a severe humanitarian crisis with shortages of food, clean water, and medicine. Residents have reported consuming garden herbs to survive the scarcity. The city has also lacked electricity and gas since last year.
Representatives from Ukraine and Russia confirmed the validity of the pact. The initiative allows civilians to choose whether they wish to move to Ukrainian or Russian territory. The American government highlighted that the intervention was necessary to enable aid for the elderly and the departure of residents.
Geopolitical instability in conflict zones increases risk aversion in global markets. Events that reduce military tensions can influence the demand for safe-haven assets and impact the volatility of the dollar and Bitcoin.
