An Austrian Airlines flight traveling from Tel Aviv to Vienna made an emergency landing in Sofia. The decision followed a bomb threat received by the crew during the flight. The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport confirmed the incident involving the aircraft carrying 51 passengers and six crew members.
The plane was near the Romanian border when the technical team opted for the diversion. A MiG-29 fighter jet from the Bulgarian Air Force escorted the Airbus A320 to Sofia Airport. All occupants disembarked safely after landing.
Crisis response teams were deployed to conduct a thorough search of the aircraft. Bulgarian authorities have launched an official investigation into the origin of the threat. The airline is working to rebook passengers on new flights as soon as the inspection is complete.
Flight tracking data recorded the transmission of a general emergency code shortly before the course change. The plane had departed from Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday night. The episode highlights regional instability and the heightened focus on security within the civil aviation sector.
