An armed attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan has resulted in the deaths of seven people. The incident took place in the village of Hamoud, located in Karak province, during a funeral procession.
Witnesses reported that two masked men stepped out of a vehicle and began firing. The group used a handgun and a rifle against those attending the religious ceremony.
Public Security Director Obaidullah Al-Maaytah confirmed that 34 people were wounded in the attack. Security forces have launched a manhunt for the suspects and the government has promised severe punishment for those involved.
King Abdullah II declared that the country will deal with those responsible with firm resolve. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya classified the action as a terrorist act unprecedented in the country's recent history.
This event occurs in a region historically marked by coexistence between different religious groups. Jordan is home to a population of approximately 300,000 Christians in a country of 11.5 million inhabitants.
Geopolitical instability in the Middle East tends to increase risk aversion in global financial markets. This scenario may boost demand for safe-haven assets and put pressure on the dollar against emerging market currencies.
