American Bitcoin Profit Masks Mining Challenges
Company reported $126 million gain, but operating costs rise as rivals pivot to artificial intelligence.
Miner American Bitcoin posted a quarterly net profit of $126 million. This result was driven by $197.3 million in accounting gains from its Bitcoin reserves. Without this effect, the company would have reported an operating loss of approximately $5.5 million.
Direct mining revenue fell 5.5% compared to the previous quarter, totaling $63.4 million. The cost to produce one Bitcoin unit rose 15%, reaching $42,100. The operation's gross margin dropped from 49% to 41% during the period.
The company mined 891 Bitcoin units in the quarter, a volume lower than the 932 units produced previously. Shares of the company closed down 15% following the release of the financial data. The performance fell short of revenue estimates projected by the market.
The mining sector is currently experiencing a clear strategic divide. While American Bitcoin maintains an exclusive focus on asset reserves, rivals like Riot Platforms and Core Scientific are directing investments toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. This shift seeks to diversify revenue sources in the face of pressure on energy costs.
