Eurozone Sets Deadline to Choose New ECB Leadership
Member states must submit candidates to replace Christine Lagarde by November 6.
Countries using the euro as their official currency have until November 6 to submit their candidates for the presidency of the European Central Bank. The decision follows the announcement of Christine Lagarde's early departure, as she will step down from the institution in February. Her resignation comes eight months before the scheduled end of her current term.
The Eurogroup confirmed that finance ministers from member countries will hold a special meeting on November 9. The goal of this gathering is to formally review the names submitted for the succession. The selection process will follow the procedures established by the European Union.
The final appointment of the new president will be made by the countries of the European bloc. The ultimate decision will be based on a direct recommendation from the representatives of the nations that make up the eurozone. The successor will take on the responsibility of steering monetary policy during a period of strategic transition.
