The 9.05% rate far exceeds the global average and strains the national budget

Brazil holds the top spot in the global real interest rate rankings at 9.05%. This figure is seven times higher than the 1.27% average seen across forty analyzed nations. Turkey and Argentina follow closely on the list.

The real interest rate calculation accounts for local inflation. The Central Bank of Brazil kept the benchmark rate at 13.75% per year after the Monetary Policy Committee halted its cycle of cuts. The institution justified the decision by citing uncertainties and inflation expectations above the official target.

The financial cost of Brazil's public debt has reached extreme levels. Interest payments drained over one trillion reais from the federal budget over twelve months. This amount is equivalent to 8.9% of the country's Gross Domestic Product.

The trajectory of Brazil's public debt has grown in recent years. The indicator rose from 71.7% of GDP in 2022 to 82.9% in August 2026. Industrial sectors criticize the high rates due to the negative impact on costs for both companies and households.

The high-interest environment acts as an inflation control mechanism for the Central Bank. However, the persistence of these rates fuels debates regarding the need for fiscal adjustments and alternatives for managing public debt.
