Ibstock Issues Profit Warning as UK Brick Demand Plummets
The nation's largest brickmaker reports third-quarter sales 22% below expectations and cuts production.
Ibstock, the United Kingdom's leading brick manufacturer, issued a profit warning after recording sales 22% lower than projections for the third quarter. Market volume in the British brick sector fell by 17% between July and August compared to the previous year. The company was forced to cut production by one-fifth from the original plan established in August.
The poor performance resulted in an 11% drop in the company's stock price, reaching its lowest level since 2015. The profit forecast for 2026 was revised to around 40 million pounds, falling short of the 60 million expected by the market. This scenario reflects a deep and consolidated slowdown in the British construction industry.
Construction firms have adopted financial discipline strategies to curb costs by suspending expansion plans and hiring. Berkeley Homes, for instance, has halted the acquisition of new land and the hiring of staff. The sector is struggling with regulatory costs while new home prices remain stagnant.
The British government plans to launch the Your First Home program in April, but delays in implementation are creating uncertainty. Industry executives believe that waiting for the benefit may inhibit buyer demand in the short term. Inflationary pressure limits the scope of the program, which includes restrictions on the size of real estate transactions.
