Solana Launches Alpenglow Update to Speed Up Network Finality
New technology aims to cut transaction settlement time by 99% to about 150 milliseconds

The Solana network has begun deploying the Alpenglow update to its mainnet. This project marks the first major change to the platform's consensus mechanism since its inception.
The core objective of the update is to reduce transaction finality time by 99%. The goal is to shrink the current 12.8-second wait to approximately 150 milliseconds.
The first phase of the process, called Votor, replaces the TowerBFT model with a system based on certificates and direct validator votes. This change aims to enable near-instant settlements for payments and trades.
Researchers at Anza highlighted that this reduced latency puts the blockchain infrastructure on par with Web2 systems. The improvement could enable new categories of decentralized applications that require high responsiveness.
Following Alpenglow, the development roadmap includes continued support for Agave 4.5. This additional step intends to increase the number of accounts supported in versioned transactions to optimize swap routes.
